Kerry Drew Turner was born on October 16, 1960 in Kingsville, Texas, which is situated on the famous King Ranch of Southern Texas. His entire family being musicians, he was exposed to the finest of music from a very early age. Already as a young boy Turner was involved in the music scene in San Antonio, Texas. Any the age of 10, he sang the alto part in a performance of Händel’s Messiah, was awarded the first prize at a composition contest sponsored by the Holloway House of Music, and starred as Young Patrick in the San Antonio Little Theatre’s production of “Mame.”
It was also around this time that Kerry Turner began studying the horn. After graduating a year early from High School, he entered the Baylor University School of Music where he studied with the William C. Robinson. After two years at that fine institution, Turner transferred to the Manhattan School of Music in New York where he studied with Joel Winter. It was during this period in New York City that he joined the Kammer Wind Quintet which competed in and won a prize at the Artists International Competition, resulting in a recital in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.
In 1982, Turner was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study with the great horn soloist Hermann Baumann at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart. Under Professor Baumann’s tutelage, he studied the interpretation of a vast number of works from the solo horn repertoire. At the age of 23, shortly following his studies in Stuttgart, he won the co-principal horn position of the Gürzenich Orchestra (Cologne Opera). In 1985 he was awarded the Principal and Third Horn position in the Luxembourg Philharmonic (then called the RTL-Orchestra). At about the same time, he competed in the Geneva International Horn Competition, placing in the finals, and won the Bronze Medal- Third Prize at the Prague Spring International Solo Horn Competition. It was at the Geneva Competition that he met David Johnson who invited him to join the world famous American Horn Quartet.
In 2002, Kerry Turner began performing and touring with Kristina Mascher-Turner as the Virtuoso Horn Duo. Combining his music activities with the Luxembourg Philharmonic, the American Horn Quartet and the Virtuoso Horn Duo, as well as his occasional solo appearances, he has become one of the most recognised names, not only in the horn world but in brass playing in general. Whether as a composer or a performing artist on the horn, he appears regularly on the great concert stages of the world. He is also a frequently invited soloist and clinician, having performed and taught in over 40 countries. Turner retired from the Luxembourg Philharmonic in 2020.
